2006 Outreach

During the 2006 season, Team 694 participated in and organized many outreach programs for the benefit of the community at large.

Over the years, Team 694 has continuously supported local First Lego League teams by providing mentors to aid them, as well as encouraging other junior high schools to participate in FRC's younger sibling. In 2006, however, Team 694 decided to take this a step further by actually hosting a FLL tournament right here at Stuyvesant. By making arrangements with our principal, Stanley Teitel, we were allowed use of the school cafeteria, which had an abundance of electrical sockets and a skylight. Before the competition, we also held meetings to assemble the tables, build the Lego field parts, and train team members as referees. At the competition, FRC team competitors from Brooklyn Tech and Staten Island Tech as well as ARISTA members right here from Stuy joined and aided us as volunteers and security. Because of all this forethought and planning, the FLL Regional Tournament was a huge success. Later, we were invited to referee at Riverbank State Park, where another FLL Regional Tournament was being held, and we were commemorated with a plaque for our efforts.

Team 694 has also provided support to many teams within the FRC community. During the 2006 season, our team visited fledgling Team 1880, East Harlem Tech. There, we made available to them information and resources, such as showing them games of previous years and the associated strategies that went along with these games. With our guidance, they went on to win the NYC Regional just a couple of months later.

During the competition itself, we also demonstrated the essence of FIRST sportsmanship by aiding Team 711 when a mechanical failure put their robot and team in great jeopardy. Team members dashed over to 711's pit and helped them solve their problem, which was mainly a result of wiring problems. The members of Team 711 came away from that partnership with an improved knowledge of wiring techniques, and we left with the satisfaction of helping a fellow team out.
